Day 1 - Welcome to Queenstown

Collect your Ski New Zealand rental car

Ski New Zealand have a superb range of cars from all the top companies and with a range of insurance options and inclusions that will suit you perfectly.

Arrive Queenstown and collect your NZSki Mypass from the Snow Centre

Welcome to Queenstown for your winter ski or snowboarding holiday.  It’s not just the skiing that makes Queenstown a fantastic winter destination, there’s also the spectacular scenery, amazing adventures and endless activities to keep you entertained when you’re not on the slopes.  After each action packed day, you’ll also find a superb variety of cafes and restaurants to relax and refuel at.

Today we recommend you visit the Snow Centre located on the ground floor of the Station Building at 9 Duke St and collect your mypass card.  This will save you heaps of time tomorrow as you’ll avoid the morning queues and can head straight to the mountain with more time to ski and ride.  When you visit the Snow Centre please take your Ski New Zealand itinerary with you as the Snow Centre staff will need the reference number off this.  You will need to pay a $5 refundable deposit for each mypass card and each person in your group receives their own card.  All your lift passes, rental equipment, lessons, shuttle transfers etc will be loaded onto your card.  If you’re taking the Snowline Hotel Pick-up shuttle to the mountain tomorrow you can also book this at the Snow Centre.

NZSki: Equipment Rental

Everything you need is available directly on the mountain, no need to carry it all up. You'll find the latest gear, and the on-site technicians keep it in top condition. Use the revolutionary Head BYS ski fitting system designed to reduce the amount of time taken to fit boots and skis allowing you maximum time on the slopes. The snowboard gear is the industry leading Burton 'Learn to Ride'. If you want to swap, exchange, upgrade or if you find something is not quite right, they'll take care of it on the spot. There is the added flexibility of returning your rental equipment to Coronet Peak, The Remarkables or the Queenstown Snow Centre, irrespective of where you picked it up. If you want to get fitted out the day before you start skiing or boarding, and know that you have your gear early, pick it up at Snowbiz in Queenstown.

The Remarkables Ski Field

The Remarkables offers a laid-back atmosphere which is fantastic for families and those new to skiing or snowboarding. Located just 45 minutes from Queenstown, the Remarkables features a fantastic network of trails with wide, gentle slopes for beginners of all ages and big mountain runs for the experts in the family. With 30% beginners, 40% intermediate and 30% advanced, the Remarkables offers challenges for all levels and for those wanting to progress quickly, the friendly team of instructors can be with you every step of the way. While you're up there don't forget to check out the purpose-built snow tubing lanes before you round off with a steaming hot chocolate or drink at Remarkables cafe. With regular shuttles from Queenstown, childcare for 3 months onwards and lessons for 3yrs+ and complete gear hire on the mountain, this is a fun and easy day out for visitors to the South Island.

Day 3 - Another day's skiing in Queenstown

Coronet Peak Ski Field

Want to challenge yourself on exciting terrain in some of the best conditions in the Southern Hemisphere?  Then Coronet Peak should be top of your list.   This theme park created by mother nature offers gripping trails and the extensive snowmaking facilities, makes for complete snow coverage on multiple trails. Coronet is also home to night skiing for a different take on these roller coaster trails try it under lights. For those just getting to know the snow the dedicated learner and novice areas make finding your snow feet easy and all gear can be hired on the mountain. With 25% beginners, 45% intermediate and 30% advanced, Coronet Peak has the trail for you.  For a break from the snow, enjoy live music at the base building, or wet your whistle with a hot chocolate or cold beverage at Heidi's Hut. The pizza and pasta meals are great for warming you up and giving you an energy boost for the afternoon. For the little ones there are supervised kids' programmes for 3 months upwards and snow sport school for kids and big kids alike. There are regular shuttles to and from Queenstown, which is only a 20 minute drive away.

Explore Queenstown and surrounds

Although celebrated as New Zealand's ‘adventure capital’ Queenstown offers far more than a fast paced action-packed holiday. Settled on the shores of Lake Wakatipu beneath a soaring panorama of the Remarkables Mountain Range, this alpine town is surrounded by a plethora of historic, gastronomic and scenic wonders.
Head down the Gibbston Valley wine trail to sample some of the region’s best Pinot or catch a ride on the 100 year old Steamship - the TSS Earnslaw -  to Walter Peak Station for dinner and a farm tour. Browse the waterfront cafes and have lunch at Michelin star chef Josh Emett's ‘Rata.’ Check out nearby historic Arrowtown and enhance your experience with a four wheel drive trip to Macetown.
Take a leisurely lakeside stroll or ride the gondola for breathtaking views. Venture further afield into the Fiordland National Park or head over the Crown Range to Wanaka. Drive through Lord Of The Rings country - or for the really fanatic, jump aboard one of many dedicated LOTR tours. And after all of that - if you do really want the adrenaline rush Queenstown is known for, take your pick from the Shotover Jet, Canyon Swing, Zipline, Luge or Heli-ski.

Day 5 - Cross the Crown Range Road to Wanaka or for an alternative route travel via the Kawarau Gorge

Take the short drive from Queenstown to Wanaka

Head out of Queenstown and over New Zealand's highest sealed road, Crown Range Road before dropping into Wanaka. Take it easy as this road can be a little 'interesting' in winter. There are plenty of signs advising the road conditions and there is a slightly longer but lower altitude route via Cromwell. If you do take the Crown Range route then you should time your trip to stop at the Cardrona Hotel for 'sustenance'. This 'world famous in New Zealand' landmark will have some great food and a welcoming log fire.

Explore the winter wonderland of Wanaka

Wanaka is situated in the ideal position for those who love powder days.  Set on the shores of Lake Wanaka, this alpine village boasts a warm laid back atmosphere, with a range of cafes, bars and restaurants to enjoy your après ski chill out session.  While visiting Wanaka you’ll have two of the Southern Hemisphere’s best ski fields just a short drive away.  Treble Cone which has been voted the best ski field in New Zealand for two years running and family friendly Cardrona Ski Resort, perfect for first timers.  When you’re not hitting the slopes there are plenty of other activities in Wanaka to keep you entertained, including miles of scenic walking and biking tracks, vineyards to visit and for inside activities for the kids check out the weird and wacky Puzzling World, the Transport and Toy Museum or the indoor climbing wall, great for burning off excess energy.

Day 8 - Head north to Methven via Mt Cook National Park

Journey through to Mt Cook National Park from Wanaka

Leaving Wanaka you head towards the Lindis Pass, the divide between Central Otago and the MacKenzie Country.   This is one of New Zealand’s highest roads at 971 metres. Descending into the Mackenzie Basin you follow the Ahuriri River with the remarkable Clay Cliffs in the distance before arriving into the farming township of Omarama.  The Wrinkly Ram is a great place to stop for a refreshment stop.  Carrying on you pass Twizel before arriving at the spectacular Lake Pukaki, here you leave the main highway and follow the length of Lake Pukaki to Mt Cook National Park.

Mt. Cook National Park to Methven via the Inland Scenic Route

Your first stop today should be the visitor centre on the southern shores of Lake Pukaki. As well as a great presentation detailing the formation of the region over thousands of years you are also often rewarded with uninterrupted views of over 50 kilometres to the peak of Mt. Cook. Lake Tekapo, the northern most of the large Southern Lakes also the reflective quality that Pukaki has making the waters a bright turquoise on certain days. This busy little township is home to some of the most photographed subjects in the country, the Church of the Good Shepherd and the Collie Dog statue. It's a great place to take a scenic flight, enjoy a guided horse trek, a boat trip on the pristine lake or just enjoy the magnificent views.
Heading north east through the fertile regions around Fairlie and Geraldine the drive takes you along the Inland Scenic Route, a well signposted and recognised alternative to the main highways. The route travels close to the foothills of the Southern Alps before arriving into Methven. The region is renowned for its outdoor adventure and during winter as the hub for activities such as skiing at Mt. Hutt and heli-skiing in the backcountry.

The New Zealand 1 Day Superpass is your ticket to fun both on or off the mountains. The New Zealand Superpass can also be used as a Twilight Pass on applicable days at Coronet Peak (visit the Guest Services Desk to swap to a Twilight Pass). If you decide not to ski you can also swap your New Zealand Superpass for credit towards a selection of off-mountain activities, retail stores, bars and restaurants in Queenstown and Methven.

Day 10 - Cross the Canterbury Plains to the city of Christchurch

Methven to Christchurch

Follow the inland scenic route across the Rakaia Gorge taking time to stop and enjoy the spectacular views of the river. The tiny villages of Windwhistle, Glenroy and Glentunnel guide you towards Darfield, a larger agricultural service centre and then onto the city of Christchurch.

Explore the evolving city of Christchurch

If you’ve got some free time in Christchurch there are plenty of ways to keep yourself and the family entertained.  Located next to the airport is the fun and interactive International Antarctic Centre, you could easily wile away a full day here watching the penguins, riding the Hagglund and experiencing life as a fearless explorer.  The Christchurch Gondola on a fine day offers fantastic views of the region stretching all the way to the Southern Alps.  For an introduction to the city centre including the impact of the Christchurch earthquakes and the subsequent rebuild, there are a number of city tours to choose from: the Christchurch Bike Tour for those wanting an active tour; the red double-decker bus city tour or for a touch of history ride the Christchurch Tram.

Your last day in New Zealand before heading to Christchurch airport and catching your flight home

Today you’ll head to Christchurch airport and catch your flight home.  If you’re on a late flight take the morning to explore some of Christchurch’s family friendly activities, including the gondola or right next to the airport the International Antarctic Centre is an interactive and fun experience.
