Whakapapa ski field

Whakapapa Ski Area on the north-western slopes of Mt Ruapehu is New Zealand's largest ski area. Whakapapa is home to New Zealand's premiere beginners' area, Happy Valley. It's a big complete learners area in its own valley away from the worry of faster skiers/boarders putting you off. It has its own cafe, rental complex and ski school meeting area. The gentle slope is nice and long, giving you plenty of time to really get the hang of your new sport and there is a slow-moving chairlift that takes you to the top of the slope while giving your legs a rest between runs. There are also more than 30 groomed trails that intermediate skiers and boarders love. The volcanic terrain at Whakapapa gives a massive variety between trails, giving you the choice of bumps, chutes, drops, bowls or nice wide runs. With 24 black and black diamond runs plus the lift accessed Black Magic backcountry area, there is plenty at Whakapapa to get the adrenaline pumping even for the most expert of experts.

Today you can choose to visit the Whakapapa or Turoa ski fields

Today choose whether you want to ski or snowboard at Whakapapa or Turoa. Remember if the weather doesn't play ball or you need an unexpected rest day you can swap your ski days around. With the two ski fields being on opposing sides of the mountain if it is windy on one side the other may be sheltered.

Whakapapa Village to Auckland City

From Tongariro you pass through Taumaranui, once a busy train town on the 'main trunk line' between Auckland and Wellington. Into the lush farmland of the King country so named after the movement of the Maori chief King Tawhiao who led a resistance against the Europeans. After failing to prevent the invasion he and his followers fled and sought refuge in the remote hills. Europeans venturing into the region did so at the risk of capture or worse!
One of the most famous locations on this drive is Waitomo and its vast network of limestone caves. A short detour from the main highway and you can be exploring the fascinating underworld or visiting he glow worm caves. At Otorohanga you can also visit  to the Kiwi House to see some of New Zealand's native birds in particular our famous flightless namesake.
The city of Hamilton is New Zealand's largest non coastal settlement and one of the star attractions are the Botanical Gardens. Auckland City is just around 1 hour further north. It is New Zealand's largest city with a population of around 1.5 million people (about one third of the national population), spread over approximately 60 square kilometres. Just to give you an idea of the diversity Auckland offers: it lies between 2 seas, the Tasman to the west and the Pacific to the east; it has two mountain ranges, the Hunua Ranges and the Waitakere Ranges; it has 48 volcanic cones, 50 Gulf Islands, and over 800 parks and reserves. The city offers a unique and remarkable experience.
