Discover Queenstown this winter

Queenstown in winter is a magical destination.  Surrounded by snow-capped mountains the town takes on a festive atmosphere that is contagious.   If you’re here for the powder you’re spoiled for choice with 3 mountains within an hour’s drive, you can choose from The Remarkables, Coronet Peak or Cardrona Ski Resort.  When you’re not slip-sliding-away there is plenty of off mountain entertainment in the ‘Adventure Capital’ of New Zealand.  The iconic Jet Boat ride on the Shotover River is a must, as is luging at the Skyline Gondola.  For a bigger thrill Queenstown is the birthplace of commercial bungy jumping or take it easy with a tour of the Gibbston Valley wineries.  Queenstown also has a great range of restaurants, cafes and take-out options, ranging from the famous Fergburger takeaways (it’s worth the queuing) to Rata restaurant with Michelin starred Josh Emett at the helm.

SUGGESTED ACTIVITY - Leap from the AJ Hackett bungy jump off the Kawarau Bridge

Take a leap from the original AJ Hackett commercial bungy jump – off the historic Kawarau Bridge in Queenstown.  If you’re feeling brave why not throw in an optional mid-winter river bungy dip in the Kawarau River as well, the best way to know you’ve reached the bottom of your 43m free fall.

SUGGESTED ACTIVITY - Queenstown Skyline Gondola to Bob's Peak

For a different perspective of Queenstown take the Skyline Gondola to the top of Bob’s Peak.  The Queenstown Skyline Gondola or cable car as it’s also known, is the steepest in the Southern Hemisphere so you very quickly reach heights that offer spectacular 220 degree views.  At the top you’ll have access to viewing platforms for great views of your favourite mountains, there’s also a café to enjoy a drink while soaking up the surrounds.

Your Accommodation: Copthorne Hotel and Resort Queenstown Lakefront

The Copthorne Hotel and Resort, Queenstown Lakefront is conveniently located within walking distance to the centre of Queenstown and just a few minutes stroll from the picturesque Lake Wakatipu.

Day 4: Today explore Coronet Peak Ski field

NZSki Snowline Hotel Pick Up and Return Pass

No need to bother with chains or road conditions, instead you can sit back and rest up in preparation for your active day ahead and enjoy the incredible views.

Coronet Peak Ski Field

Want to challenge yourself on exciting terrain in some of the best conditions in the Southern Hemisphere?  Then Coronet Peak should be top of your list.   This theme park created by mother nature offers gripping trails and the extensive snowmaking facilities, makes for complete snow coverage on multiple trails. Coronet is also home to night skiing for a different take on these roller coaster trails try it under lights. With 25% beginners, 45% intermediate and 30% advanced, Coronet Peak has the trail for you.  For a break from the snow, enjoy live music at the base building, or wet your whistle with a hot chocolate or cold beverage at Heidi's Hut. The pizza and pasta meals are great for warming you up and giving you an energy boost for the afternoon. For the little ones there are supervised kids' programmes for 3 months upwards and snow sport school for kids and big kids alike. There are regular shuttles to and from Queenstown, which is only a 20 minute drive away.

Day 5: Give your legs a break and take a scenic journey to Milford Sound

More free time in the Adventure Capital of Queenstown

If the weather plays ball and you’re legs are up to it take to the slopes again, maybe even venture over to Treble Cone for the day.  Just a 90 minute drive from Queenstown, this ski field has been voted New Zealand’s best ski resort for 2 years running.  If you need a rest day you can always slip in a spot of retail therapy at Queenstown’s many shops or take the short drive to Arrowtown.  This historic village is perfect for strolling and as an added bonus is home to a fantastic range of shops, cafes and restaurants.  A winter holiday in Queenstown doesn’t need to be all about the snow there are many other ways to spend your day, including golf at Millbrook Resort, a day trip to Glenorchy to explore Mt Aspiring National Park on the Dart River Wilderness Safari, or maybe take a scenic flight over snow covered Fiordland National Park to the spectacular Milford Sound.

SUGGESTED ACTIVITY - Milford Sound Flight and Scenic Cruise with Return Flight

Departing Queenstown Airport, you enjoy a scenic flight to Milford Sound. During the flight you will experience panoramic views of spectacular alpine scenery, lush rainforest, and finally Milford Sound. Once on the ground at Milford Airport you are transferred by coach to the Real Journeys Visitor Centre to board a Real Journeys luxury vessel for a cruise the full-length of Milford Sound. The vessel provides excellent viewing and there is plenty of time available to enjoy the waterfalls, rainforest, mountains and wildlife.
Sheer cliffs starting hundreds of metres below the waters surface rise spectacularly to the sky. It is 16 kilometres from the head of the fiord to the open sea and Real Journeys cruise ships will take you there and back comfortably in around 2 hours. Dolphins and seals can often be seen, and following a large downpour the waterfalls that line the fiords are magnificent, particularly the 146 metre high Stirling Falls. The luxury vessels stop at various points and offer excellent viewing of waterfalls, rainforest, mountains and wildlife. The cruise is accompanied by comprehensive commentaries. Following the cruise you are transferred the short distance to Milford Airport by coach for your return flight.

SUGGESTED ACTIVITY - Milford Sound day trip and nature cruise

While you’re visiting New Zealand’s South Island, why not take a break from skiing and discover one of the most beautiful road journey’s in the world and the pristine wilderness of Milford Sound.  Your Milford day trip from Queenstown includes luxury coach travel to Milford Sound.  This is the best way to travel in winter as the area is often covered in snow, so you’ll get to sit back and enjoy the snowy scenes while your experienced driver does the hard work.  Along the way you’ll stop for photos at spectacular spots and your coach drive provides informative commentary.  On arrival in Milford you’ll board your launch for a 2.5 hour nature cruise taking in endless waterfalls and forest clad peaks.  A picnic lunch is included on board, before returning to the wharf and taking the coach journey back to Queenstown.

Day 6: Continue on the slopes or wind down with a wine tour or dinner on Bob's Peak

Discover Glenorchy gateway to Paradise

Following the edge of Lake Wakatipu is a beautiful drive which takes you to the village of Glenorchy, a step back in time where you’re likely to see locals riding horseback through the town centre.  Glenorchy is also the gateway to the amazing wilderness of Mt Aspiring National Park the location for many Lord of the Rings and Hobbiton movie scenes.  Great ways to experience the park are on a Dart River Wilderness Safari or take a day walk on the spectacular Routeburn Track.

Explore the Wineries and Vineyards of Gibbston Valley

The Gibbston Valley is a premier boutique wine growing region right on Queenstown’s doorstep.  Stretching from the Kawarau Suspension Bridge to Lake Hayes, the area is heavily planted in grapes, including pinot noir which Central Otago does so well.  Vineyards that shouldn’t be missed include Peregrine with its architecturally designed cellar, Chard Farm and Gibbston Valley Wines home to New Zealand’s largest wine cave as well as a gift shop, cheesery and café.  Another great option for lunch is Amisfield Winery, the Bistro is a real treat.  To explore Gibbston Valley you can self drive, but if you want to enjoy the tastings either join a guided wine tasting tour or a supported bike tour, where they’ll pick you up after the wine tasting, saving you from a wobbly ride home.

SUGGESTED ACTIVITY - Afternoon Boutique Wine Tasting Tour

Take a break from the slopes and explore the award winning wineries and vineyards from Gibbston Valley along the Kawarau Gorge to Bannockburn and Cromwell.  Appellation Wine Tours have a long history with the vineyards in the region and will take you to 4 wineries for tastings, carefully selecting those that best match the interests of that day’s small tour group.  You’ll also enjoy a delicious platter lunch at Carrick Winery and take in the gold mining history and magnificent scenery of the area.

SUGGESTED ACTIVITY - Gondola ride and dinner at Skyline's Stratosfare Restaurant

Dinner at Stratosfare Restaurant and Bar high atop Bob’s Peak overlooking the Remarkables and lights of Queenstown is not to be missed.  Be sure to arrive before sunset to watch the light play out over the snow-capped mountains.    The cuisine is inspired by fresh New Zealand ingredients and includes something for everyone, including succulent seafood and meats, fantastic vegetarian options and deserts that will be hard to resist.
