Auckland to Ohakune

The drive south from Auckland takes you past the Bombay Hills and into the rolling farmland and rich dairy pastures of the Waikato - before arriving in the limestone hills of the Waitomo countryside, home to a huge underground network of caves .There are many ways to experience the magic below ground - enjoy a gentle boat trip under a ceiling of glow worms, take the longest underground walking tour in Ruakuri Cave or for a slight more thrilling adventure try black water rafting - an underground caving and rafting trip of a lifetime.

Driving south from Waitomo you'll pass through the rugged rural countryside of the King Country, named after the Maori King Tawhiao who lived in exile here in the mid 1800's. Limestone formations are also a feature of the region, as well as Waitomo, nearby Piopio has some remarkable cliffs which were filmed for the Hobbit movies. Your destination of Ohakune lies on the edge of Tongariro National Park, established in 1887 after the Maori chief Te Heuheu Tukino IV gifted the sacred peaks to the nation. It was also only the fourth place on earth to be given recognition as a World Heritage area. At the heart of the park are three active volcanoes, Tongariro, Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe. Despite the barren and sometimes inhospitable environment, the region abounds with flora and fauna. The Tongariro Crossing is one of New Zealand's Great Walks and there are many other tracks and trails to suit all capabilities. Also lying within the park is two of New Zealand's largest ski fields, Whakapapa and Turoa.

Arrive into Ohakune and collect your Ski Passes

Welcome to Ohakune for your winter ski or snowboarding holiday. Its not just the skiing that makes Mt Ruapehu a fantastic winter destination, there's also the spectacular scenery and amazing adventures to keep you entertained when you are not on the slopes. After each action packed day, you will also find a range of cafes and restaurants to relax and refuel at.

Today we recommend you visit the Snow Depot in Ohakune (27 Ayr St) to pick up your ski passes. This will save you heaps of time tomorrow as you will avoid the morning queues and can head straight to the mountain with more time to ski and ride. When you visit the Snow Depot please take your Ski New Zealand itinerary with you as the staff will need the reference number off this.

For those who aren't ready for skiing or snowboarding, there's a sledding slope and a free public snow play area too! When you're ready to progress, a short ride up the Park Lane chairlift takes you to a slightly steeper beginner area, the Wintergarden, where you can develop your new skills and enjoy a break at the rustic Snowflake Burger Bar. The intermediate terrain at Turoa is mostly wide and smooth, making it a perfect progression from the beginner runs. There are 12 groomed intermediate runs, all of which are nice and long and many of them link to one another so you can enjoy excellent intermediate skiing and riding all the way from the top of Australasia's highest lift to the base area. With 25 black and black diamond runs and two spectacular lift-accessed backcountry areas you'll find a massive variety of terrain as an advanced skier/rider at Turoa. Enjoy the natural half-pipes and chutes through the Organ Pipes and the Solitude backcountry area or the amazing wide sweeping terrain of the Triangle and the Glacier backcountry area.
