Kids lessons at New Zealand ski fields

The best thing you can do for your child and their skiing is to drop them off and leave them to it.

New Zealand's ski fields offer a fantastic range of kids ski and snowboard programmes to get your kids going on the snow. We've gathered all the different programmes available here, as well as some handy tips for when you book your kids into ski school for the first time.

Chat to one of our ski specialists for more information and to include children's ski lessons or childcare in your holiday package.

Handy Hints

#1 Leave them to it

Staying to watch your child ski might be tempting, but it will only distract them. At best they may miss some key skills, at worst they may get upset and refuse to participate. If you absolutely have to watch, do so from a distance or wear an effective disguise.

#2 Explain the day

If it's your child's first time skiing, there will be a lot to get used to (especially if they are on the younger end), ease them into it by explaining what they will be doing, have them try on their clothes and gear (if possible) before heading out for the first day, and show them some fun photos and videos of people skiing and snowboarding to get them excited.

#3 Don't visit at lunch

If your child is used to day care or other similar full day care situations, a visit may be fine, however if your child is a little uneasy about skiing, try to keep your distance until the day is finished. If your child sees you at lunch time, often they will become upset and want to leave, even if they've been having a great morning! Do your child a favour and let them enjoy the experience with the other kids - if there is a problem that needs your attention, your child's instructor will get in touch with you.

#4 Toilet time

It's the same for any big journey - take your child to the toilet before their lesson. Chances are they will get over-excited and that opens up the potential for an accident. You can do your best to avoid this by making sure they have been to the toilet before their day begins.
